DESIGNED FOR DOMINION

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; HAVE DOMINION OVER the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth – Genesis 1: 28

The making of the human race was so ushered in as to show that at length the work of creation had reached its perfection and ultimate goal. Man was the apex of creation. Moreover, the atmosphere of dominion saturated creation. Dominion or Sovereign Authority is God’s attribute. It is a core part of the Divine Image and Likeness. At human creation, the God of Dominion simply shared of His divine nature. The God of Heaven decided to make one like Himself to take charge over the earth: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth He has given to the children of men” (Psa.115:11).

You and I were designed for dominion. God designed humanity with dominion in mind. God configured Man to be the leader; to be in charge of the rest of creation. Dominion was in the Heart of the Triune God at creation of humanity (Gen.1:26-28). The declaration of the Word of Dominion preceded and succeeded the creation of Man. Pre-creation: “And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them HAVE DOMINION OVER…” (vs.26). Post-creation: “…God said to them “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; HAVE DOMINION OVER…” (vs.28).

We have seen that although the dictionary could equate dominion with domination, God’s Word does not infer the latter. Adam was given the command and charge to “have dominion over” the rest of the animals (Gen.1:28).  Adam was never given the mandate to dominate over other human beings, not even over Eve. As king over His domain, he was given further detailed assignments “to tend and keep” the Garden of Eden, which His Creator had planted for him and positioned him in (Gen.2:15). Even so, Dominion is always OVER. Adam operated in such high dimensions of divine dominion and supernatural intelligence, that he single-handedly gave names to all the animals in Eden (Gen.2:20).

Unfortunately, with the invasion of the serpent and the intrusion of Sin into the serenity of Eden, the king of Eden soon became a fugitive from the divine Presence (Gen.3:8). Dominion “died” in the first Adam. Praise God, dominion is restored in the Last Adam – Christ Jesus: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive…And so it is written, “The first Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit” (1Cor.15:22,45). Beloved in Christ, the Seed of Dominion is in you by redemption. Let it blossom and bloom, until you begin to experience dominion in all dimensions of life and destiny – concerning your health, career, marriage, parenting, and ministry, as you walk in the realities of redemption! Don't ever forget: You were designed for dominion!
