GOD’S WORD OF LIGHT (3)

“For with You is the fountain of life; in YOUR LIGHT we see LIGHT” – Psalm 36:9

Nothing else can guide our life’s pathways apart from GOD’S WORD of LIGHT: “For with You is the fountain of LIFE; in YOUR LIGHT we see LIGHT” (Psa.36:9). God Himself is the Fountain of Life – the Source and Wellspring of living waters, as well as the Author of Light. The fullness of life and the totality of light are in Him. It is ironic that this glorious truth sprang from a Psalm of Lament, in which the psalmist described those attacking him – “the transgressions of the wicked” (v1). The thrust of verses 1-4 was: “Lord, my enemies are evil and wicked in attitude, words, devices, and deeds” The psalmist described the flattery, iniquity, hatred, deceitful mouth, and evil devices of the wicked.

However, negativity swiftly bowed to a positive disposition. In pleading with the Lord to rescue him, the psalmist praised God’s Faithfulness: “Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep…” (vv.5-6a). He was suddenly enraptured by the Vision of God’s Great Mercy, Faithfulness, and Righteousness. He spoke of the preciousness of God’s lovingkindness, which enables us to put our trust under the shadow of His wings (v.7). The crescendo: “They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light” (vv.8-9). The psalmist then concluded with powerful prayers and declarations of Faith (vv.10-12).

GOD IS LIGHT: “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that GOD IS LIGHT and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 Jh.1:5). God doesn’t simply have light; He Himself is Light: “The LORD is MY LIGHT and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psa.27:1). James 1:17 describes our God as “the Father of Lights, who whom there is no variation or shadpw of turning.” Our Lord Jesus Christ declared pointedly: “I AM THE LIGHT of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (Jh.8:12).

John the Beloved distinguished between John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus: “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear WITNESS of the LIGHT, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the TRUE LIGHT which gives light to every man coming into the world” (Jh.1:6-9). John witnessed to Jesus as the TRUE LIGHT. To follow Jesus is to never walk in darkness, but in the LIGHT of LIFE – the Light that gives and sustains Life. This is none other than the Light of the Word: “The entrance of YOUR WORDS gives LIGHT; It gives understanding to the simple” (Psa.119: 130).

This Light shines brightest in the thickest of darkness. When David was supposed to be lamenting, the Spirit of God quickened the Revelation – the Light – of God’s Faithfulness in his heart and he boldly declared: “IN YOUR LIGHT we see LIGHT”! Beloved, this should be our Faith confession and declaration in this New Year. Notwithstanding the attacks, deceit, devices, flattery, hatred, and transgressions of the wicked, by the Word of the Lord and the Power of His Spirit, we shall experience Jesus as our eternal Fountain of Life, and infinite Source of Light!
