JESUS – THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

He SENT HIS WORD, and HEALED them, and delivered them from their destructions – Psalm 107:20

The Original Surgeon performed the first major operation, without spilling a drop of blood or leaving a scar (Gen.2:21-23). In due time, “HE SENT HIS WORD, and HEALED…and DELIVERED…” John 1:14 affirm: “…the WORD became flesh and dwelled among us…” JESUS is the WORD – the eternal Logos – SENT to heal and deliver mankind from destruction. All through His public ministry, love and compassion moved Him to heal the sick and deliver the oppressed. Jesus is God manifest in the flesh; Love manifest in the flesh. He said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (Jh.4:34). Jesus’ healing the sick is the Will and Work of the Father in accomplishment.

In a single day, He delivered the man with an unclean spirit in the synagogue; touched and healed Simon’s mother-in-law of a fever; healed diverse diseases; and cast out many demons (Mk.1:23-34). A leper met Jesus and asked if He was willing to heal him. He could have just said ‘Yes, be healed’ and the leper would have received his healing. Jesus however touched him with compassion before healing him. It was like saying, ‘I will not only heal you; I place My hand in your affairs’ (Mk.1:40-45). Jesus touches to transform. His healing touch uproots demonic seeds of diseases (Mt.15:13).

Doctor Jesus wants to have a hand in your affairs and then send you out as His hand to your world. It does not matter how long the pain and torture has lasted. He liberated the daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound for eighteen years (Lk.13:11-16). He wiped out the sickness of thirty-eight years in an instant (Jh.5:2-9). On Calvary, He paid the ultimate price, not only for Sin but also for all sicknesses: “by whose stripes, you were healed” (1Pet.2:24). The Great Physician is still going about – through us His people – healing the sick (Acts 10:38). We can now rise up in faith and sing to His Praise:

The great Physician now is near,
The sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
Oh, hear the voice of Jesus.
