Daniel 1: 8-21

“As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and SKILL in all literature and wisdom… – Daniel 1:17a

Crossing over into the second half of our Year of God-glorifying Impact, it’s time to nurture vital LIFE SKILLS for IMPACT: “As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and SKILL in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams” (Dan.1:17). We have examined: the Call to a Life of Impact; meaning and essence of God-glorifying Impact; Insight, Faith, and Intimacy for Impact; Ingredients and Drivers of Impact – including focus, vision, decisions, and choices; Divine Power for Impact; and Biblical Models of Impact. Lifestyles and Skills are also crucial to making positive Impact.

It is apt to begin this revelational adventure into lifestyles and skills for godly impact with the examples of Daniel and his three young companions in Babylon. Today’s scripture passage highlights key lifestyles and skills that produce godly impact. These include: resolving conflict with wisdom; effective communication; developing discernment, and cultivating resilience. Daniel and his mates demonstrated these skills by humbly requesting a test of their diet, showing wisdom in interacting with the chief eunuch, and ultimately excelling in their tasks, signifying the power of faith-based decision-making and its positive impact.

In dealing with conflict wisely, Daniel didn't simply refuse the king's food, he diplomatically proposed a respectful substitute. Mastery of effective communication, another vital life and leadership skill, was shown by Daniel’s ability to articulate his request and negotiate a trial period. Discernment was evident in his understanding that the king's food could defile him. This ability to distinguish between what is permissible and what is not, is crucial for sustaining a godly lifestyle. Above all, the young men cultivated resilience and remained true to their convictions, while facing pressure to conform to the Babylonian diet (v.16).

That God gave Daniel and his companions knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom, highlights the importance of lifelong learning and seeking understanding in all areas of life. In particular, Daniel's faithfulness to God's law and his willingness to obey Him, even in a foreign land, are foundational to his godly impact. His commitment to not defiling himself with the king's food demonstrates a life of integrity and a refusal to compromise his values. His confidence in God's ability to sustain them on a different diet, and ultimately his success, showcased a trust in God's provision and guidance.

Daniel's actions and character had a positive impact on those around him, including the chief eunuch, signifying the power of godly influence in everyday life.  By focusing on these life skills and lifestyles, he established how to live a life of godly impact even in a challenging and unfamiliar environment.

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
