THE LIGHT OF LIFE (3)

“While you have THE LIGHT, BELIEVE in THE LIGHT, that you may become SONS of LIGHT” – John 12:36

One of our Father’s primary purposes is that we believe and walk in THE LIGHT of LIFE in order to become SONS of LIGHT: "Then Jesus said to them, 'A little while longer the LIGHT is with you. WALK while you have the LIGHT, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have THE LIGHT, believe in THE LIGHT, that you may become SONS of LIGHT” (Jh.12: 35-36). Three Key Points emerge: (a) Jesus is the Light – We are to walk in the Light and not in the darkness; (b) Our opportunity to embrace the Light is now – We must not carelessly waste away in darkness; and (c) Jesus desires for all to become sons of Light!

Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. Those who follow Him will never walk in darkness, but enjoy “the Light of Life” (Jh.8:12). Light in Scripture is symbolic of God and His holiness, righteousness, and wisdom. In contrast, the world abides and walks in the darkness of sin, evil, and ignorance. Light always dispels darkness. Jesus came to shine light in the darkness of the world – to open our eyes to His reality. By the dawning of Jesus – the Great Light of Life, people who once were doomed to darkness and destruction are now given hope; those once dwelling in the shadow of death, now have their feet set on the path of peace (Isa.9:2; Lk.1:79).

Our Lord Jesus then admonished that we use our present opportunities. We are given the light for a little while; we must walk in the light while we have it. This is in two senses. First, our time on this earth is both short and limited. The throne of grace will one day be replaced by the throne of judgment. The door of salvation through faith in Christ will not always be open neither will the time for repenting remain unending. The fountain that cleanses sin will not always be accessible – the way to it will one day be barred and there will remain nothing but the lake of fire. Our day of opportunity is now at hand. Second, the present time is gradually winding up for the world. Eternity beckons!

The end-times call for us to be aroused from drowsiness and lethargy, and walk in manners worthy of the Light. Rather than waste prized time in carelessness, idleness, and selfishness, we must walk while we have the Light. How we live matters greatly both in Time and for Eternity. We must make good use of our limited time. We make our choices and then our choices make us. It is Christ’s desire for all to be sons of Light, yet sadly many, rather than choose this narrow path of Light and Life, follow the broad road to destruction (Mt.7: 13-14).
