1 Samuel 2: 1-10

“And HANNAH PRAYED and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord....”1 Samuel 2:1a

Insight into certain MODEL PRAYERS of THE BIBLE will enhance our ability to Prevail in Prayer by the Word: “And HANNAH PRAYED and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, because I rejoice in Your salvation” (1 Sam.2:1). Prayer is communication with God. Prayer is also a unique place to partake of the breadth and depth of divine life. Throughout God’s Word, there are many examples of powerful, sincere prayers that stand as models. Apart from the Lord’s Prayer (Mt.6: 5-15; 11: 1-4), scripture records many others offered in varied settings, by diverse people, and demonstrating the depth of emotions – heartaches and joy – that can exist in our communication with God.

Studying how the saints of old prayed could help to develop us in prayer, increase our faith, and move us into new levels of communion with God. On the onset, we may not be able to pray with the courage of Abraham, the passion of Moses, the burden of Hannah, or the persistence of Daniel, but we’ll surely learn worthwhile lessons along the way as we grow to pray with greater faith. Though there are many profound prayers in the Bible, we shall be able to focus only on a few. Three of the Model Prayers in the Old Testament are:

Hannah’s Prayer of Adoration and Praise (1 Samuel 2:1-10)

Hannah’s Prayer flowed from a heart full of gratitude. This faith-filled woman faced the problem of barrenness, which was considered shameful. She prayed to the Lord in the temple of Shiloh for a son and vowed that she will dedicate her child to Him. The Lord granted her prayer and gave her a son whom she called Samuel (1 Sam.1: 1-20). She began her prayer with adoration for God (v.1). We must do likewise, remembering that God is our only Constant and Stronghold (v.2). Let’s put our trust in Him, embrace Him with our brokenness, heart cries, and longings, and He will help us. In His Presence, we will find security. Hannah was reminded of the past oppression and injustice against her, but instead of seeking for vindication, she resisted the temptation to retaliate, but let go and let God (vv. 3-10).

Jabez’ Prayer for Strength, Protection and Enlargement (1 Chronicles 4:10)

“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, “Oh that You would bless me, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted what he requested.” Though brief, Jabez’ cry to God shows his belief in having a great purpose to accomplish. We also must acknowledge God’s Lordship over our lives, and that all enduring blessings come from Him alone. Jabez defied the negative testimony of his name – which means ‘he causes pain’ – and believed that his identity is in God. We must also come to God vulnerable, but boldly ask for His Hand of Protection. Jabez had a heart to invest in God’s Kingdom. Rather than seek personal wealth, he wanted God to expand his spiritual territory. Such prayers close to God’s Heart will be answered!

Daniel's Prayer for Forgiveness on Behalf of His People (Daniel 9:1-19).

When Daniel realized the 70 years of exile were ended, he offered this prayer of confession in which he identified with the sins of his people and asked for God's mercy. Daniel was the man who found favour in God’s eyes and was divinely defended in the lion’s den. But his prayers also commendable and offer precious lessons. From a contrite heart, Daniel prayed for forgiveness on behalf of his people. He was genuine and earnest about acknowledging and confessing their specific sins (Dan.9:5-6). Confessing sins is a form of healing prayer because it brings darkness into the light. We also can take comfort knowing that no depth and amount of sin can separate us from God’s Love and Mercy (Dan.9: 9-10). Finally, Daniel asked God to forgive his people, though they were not deserving (Dan.9: 18-19).

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
