TOWER OF STRENGTH AND SAFETY

“The NAME of the LORD is a STRONG TOWER; the righteous run to it and are safe” – Proverbs 18:10

The Name of the LORD is MY TOWER of STRENGTH and SAFETY: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Pro.18:10). There is no stronger tower or safer place than His Name: “O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!” (Psa. 8:9). How majestic is His name! ‘The name of the Lord’ is the Biblical expression for the whole character and attributes of God, as He has sovereignly revealed Himself to humankind.

Our God introduced Himself to Israel as ‘I AM THAT I AM!’ (Exo.3:14). No other being can say that. We can only say: ‘I am that which God made me.’ His Name proclaims Him to be self-existent, eternal, changeless, and infinite. That’s why He alone is the Strong Tower into Whom we may run and be safe. Let’s consider eight of the diverse dimensions of His Name!

His Name is Jehovah-Jireh: “in the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided” (Gen.22:13-14). As Abraham passed the test of trust and faith, God revealed Himself as the Great Provider. Just a short distance from where God provided a ram in Isaac’s place, He provided the ultimate sacrifice in our place, the Lamb of God, JESUS, who took away the sins of the whole world. In His Name, all that the Father has are ours!

His Name is Jehovah-shalom, “the LORD is Peace” (Jud.6:22-24). Gideon built an altar so-named, in response to God’s angelic visitation. He alone gives a peace that the world cannot understand. In the midst of tests and trials His peace can overwhelm us and bring us to a place of boundless comfort and unspeakable joy: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jh.16:33).

His Name is Jehovah-Shammah, the Lord is there (Eze.48:35). His Name provides the privilege of His Presence: “where two or three are gathered together IN MY NAME, there I am in their midst” (Mt.18:20).

His Name is El Elyon, our Sovereign: when we believe in His Sovereignty, trusting Him implicitly, He manifests His control in and over our lives, such that we’ll never experience regret.

His Name is El Kanna, the Jealous God. He says: “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exo.34:14 NIV). His affection runs deep. He wants nothing to take His place in our lives and hearts. He is jealous about His relationship with us to the point of protecting us against any intruder.

His Name is El Roi – the One who see you! Hagar, an unloved servant became pregnant by her master and mistreated by her mistress. She ran away and was found by an angel of the LORD who assured her that God had heard her cry of distress: “Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” (Gen.16:13). You may feel like God has forgotten you wading through the muck and mire of life. El Roi knows! He sees! He cares! 

His Name is Abba – Father: “…you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out,” Abba, Father” (Rom.8:15).  As many as place their faith in Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, are adopted into His forever family. We bear His name – Christian. And He lives His life in us (Gal.2:20). How wonderful to be able to call God such an intimate name – ABBA.      

Above all else, HIS NAME is JESUS – Emmanuel – “God with us” (Mt.1:21-23). His Name is exalted above every name in heaven, on earth or under the earth (Phil.2:9-11). At His name, Satan trembles, demons flee, and all knees bow (Mk.16:17; Lk.10:19)! All prayers answer to His Name! His Name is tailored to meet every need. His Name on your tongue releases the Power of Life and defeats the forces of death (Pro.18:21). His Name is your TOWER of STRENGTH and SAFETY.
