CELEBRATING GOD’S AWESOMENESS

Come and SEE the works of God; He is AWESOME in His doing toward the sons of men – Psalm 66:5

God is truly awesome – in His Character, Personality, Purity, and Wonder-working Power: “awesome in His doing toward the sons of men”! The word awesome means: causing, inducing, or inspiring awe; extremely impressive; inspiring overwhelming feelings of great admiration, respect, reverence, or fear; terrific, terrible, wonderful, or extraordinary. It is however common nowadays to toss around the word ‘awesome’ and use it to describe virtually anything: a sumptuous meal, a thrilling movie, a brand new car, an exciting song, a superb presentation, or a dazzling goal. Someone says – and I concur – that the word awesome is reserved only for God!

No matter how God has demonstrated humility by condescending to relate with humanity, the Almighty is not our “buddy” to be trivialized and treated like just one of many earthly stuffs. Until we are dazed by His awesomeness, and dazzled by His terribleness, we will be way too fascinated with ourselves and lose the thrill of the privilege of belonging to an awesome God! It is time to put things in proper perspective and put God in His pre-eminent place in our hearts, attitudes, confessions, and actions, as the only One who is truly awesome, and who does awesome things in righteousness. He can also be awesome in judgement, and will severely deal with whoever trivializes His awesomeness. Ask King Uzziah (2Chr.26:16-21)!

Hear the testimonies of God’s Word: “For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth” (Psa.47:2). His Name is awesome – the LORD Most High. His Kingdom is great and incomparably awesome, covering “over all the earth”! “By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation…” (Psa.65:5a). God’s deeds, actions, and answers are awesome. Verse 3 of our text reads: “Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You” (Psa.66:3). God is awesome in His works and in the greatness of His power, but it is not enough to SEE this – we must learn to SAY so – to celebrate His awesomeness! Psalms 145;6 says “men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness”!

God is Awesome through and through: awesome in His Majestic Personality and Presence, in His Names, in His Holiness, in His Reign, in His Domain, in His Deeds, in His Works and Wonders, in His Power, in His Judgements, and in His redeeming Love that compelled His Son Jesus to descend from the Glories of heaven and ascend the cross to die for us (Psa.111:9). Modernity wants us to be overly impressed with SELF: self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth. Rather than becoming too engrossed with myself, I choose to take a closer look at God’s awesomeness. I choose to celebrate the Awesomeness of my God and King. I praise Him for His awesome works of redemption, restoration, and revival in my life. How about you?
