THE LIMITS OF CHANGE

Bible Meditation:
Jeremiah 35:1-19

Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set – Proverbs 22:28 (NKJV)

The message of Divine Change is not a permissive one for a laisse-faire approach to life. There are biblical boundaries and limits to change. Whereas change is inevitable, it can be positive or negative, constructive or destructive, progressive or retrogressive. We had noted a word of caution in an earlier meditation, to not change with the world – to not be conformed to this present evil world system (Rom.12:2). It is then pertinent to ask: What can and should change? What must not change?

Circumstances, situations, methods, strategies, and preferences can change. But biblical foundations, godly convictions, noble values, sound principles, and divine callings are sacrosanct. Psalm 11:3 asks: If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Proverbs 22:28 cautions that we respect, not remove “the ancient landmark.” 1Corinthians 3:11 says, For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  2 Timothy 2:19 also affirms that the “solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “ The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity”!

God is also not casual about callings: “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Rom.11:29). 1 Corinthians 7:20 therefore warns: “Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called.” When it comes to Kingdom Service, God wants us to be “steadfast, immovable, always bounding in the work of the Lord…” (2 Cor.15:58). The only form of change permitted here is GROWTH. We were chose; we did not choose ourselves (Jh.15:16). We did not set ourselves into service; the Master placed us where He wills. He gifts us according to His grace: “But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ” (Eph.4:7).

Therefore, blessed is that person who can adapt to changing circumstances without surrendering his convictions and calling. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values. The Rechabites in Jeremiah 35 modelled such a virtue! Do not be tempted to change your purpose in God because of present problems, but let the problem contribute to transforming your person, making you better, not bitter – while you continue to pursue purpose!

Adetokunbo O. Ilesanmi (Meditations)

Prayer:
Lord, guide and guard me through every process of change, so that my calling, convictions, foundations, principles, and values are not eroded, but are better entrenched for the fulfilment of divine purpose, in Jesus’ Name.

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
